Helping your child understand how to navigate stress and worries is an incredibly important job when it comes to raising a child. Whilst there are many things that can affect a young person’s mental health, it can be difficult for them to under day-to-day challenges. However, even though you may not be able to remove all of the stresses that your child has to deal with, you can teach and pass on skills to help them cope with it instead. This is also known as resilience. It is the ability to overcome difficult experiences and come out with a positive outlook on it. By doing this, you can teach your child how to make themselves feel better when they are going through a rough patch. Here is some advice from an independent nursery in Harpenden on how to raise a resilient child.

Be the best role model for your child. Someone who is supportive and models resilience to your child can be instantly relieving to them. Having a calm manner consistently can help your child understand how to deal with situations even if they are difficult. Be vocal about any mistakes that you make and how you can do it better next time. If your child has positive connections with you, they will grow to become a lot more resilient.
Allow your child to make some mistakes. If your child doesn’t make any mistakes, then they will never understand how they can fix their errors or how to make better decisions later on. Perseverance is also a stepping stone to becoming a resilient person and is taught from failure. Problem solving is also something that comes from this and helps children learn how to cope.
Teach your child how to problem solve. When your child comes to you with the problem, it can be easy to sort it out for them. However, help them brainstorm different ways to approach the challenge. A child who knows how to tackle a problem head on will grow to be resilient.
