The Benefits of Extra-Curricular Activities for Children

This is a collaborative post

There are a variety of reasons why extra-curricular activities are beneficial for children. They provide an opportunity for children to develop a range of important, transferrable skills, make new friends, and generally just spend their spare time productively rather than being glued to a screen. I have teamed up with a prep school in Surrey to explore these benefits in further detail.

A Chance to Learn New Skills

As mentioned above, extra-curricular activities are a chance for children to develop various skills. Not only will they become masters of their chosen field, but they will also become better at time management, socialisation, and commitment. Football and other sports can promote teamwork and leadership skills, while music lessons require perseverance, creativity, and hand-eye coordination.

Improves Academic Performance

The skills developed through extra-curricular clubs can help children in school. Memory, creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, perseverance etc, all contribute to improved academic performance.

Boosts Confidence

When children become more competent in various ways and build relationships with people outside of their usual social circle, they will become increasingly more confident and self-assured. Confidence is important because it will give your child the encouragement, they need to take risks, tackle problems independently, and step outside of their comfort zone.

Improves Health & Wellbeing

Extra-curricular clubs are great for both mental and physical health. They are a chance for children to switch off from the stressful demands of everyday life, like exams or homework. Lots of activities also require a certain level of physical activity, which is great for keeping fit and healthy.

Helps with Uni/Job Applications

When applying to university, or even a future job, being able to demonstrate commitments outside of school is important for young people and something that is looked favourably upon. Universities love to see that their candidates are willing to go above and beyond and will be a positive addition to their cohort.
